Seborrheic dermatitis is a common, chronic inflammatory skin condition that primarily affects the scalp, face, and chest. It is characterized by red, itchy patches and greasy, yellowish scales or dandruff. While the exact cause isn’t fully understood, it is linked to an overgrowth of Malassezia (a yeast-like fungus) and an inflammatory response to it. It often flares up during cold, dry weather or periods of high stress.
Common Triggers: Cold and dry weather, emotional stress, fatigue, harsh soaps or detergents, and certain neurological conditions (like Parkinson’s disease).
Topical Antifungals: Ketoconazole (Nizoral), Ciclopirox, and Selenium sulfide help reduce the Malassezia yeast population on the skin.
Topical Steroids & Calcineurin Inhibitors: Low-potency steroid creams (Hydrocortisone) or non-steroidal creams (Elidel, Protopic) to quickly reduce redness and inflammation during flares.
Medicated Shampoos: Over-the-counter or prescription-strength shampoos containing zinc pyrithione, coal tar, or salicylic acid to loosen and remove scales.
Keratolytics: Topical treatments containing urea or lactic acid to help soften and exfoliate thick crusting.
